NXP Dual Channel Class-D Amplifiers Bring Power Efficient Concert Hall-Like Sound into the Vehicle

30.07.2009 12:33 - Source: NXP

Leading ultra-efficiency Class-D amplifier family delivers vibrant sound quality and cutting-edge power efficiency for improved in-car entertainment experience

Eindhoven, The Netherlands – NXP, the independent semiconductor company founded by Philips, today extended its leadership in vehicle audio entertainment, introducing a new family of dual channel Class-D amplifiers that deliver cutting-edge sound quality and energy efficiency. The new NXP TDF8599 Class-D amplifier family operates with maximum output power from 70 – 130 watts (250 watts mono), significantly reducing power dissipation in the vehicle head-unit when compared to traditional Class-AB amplifiers and ensuring more efficient heat management.

With an extremely high dynamic audio range, the new Class-D amplifiers transform the vehicle entertainment experience, delivering concert hall-like sound quality for best-possible audio enjoyment on the move. The TDF8599 amplifier family complements NXP’s existing broad portfolio of highly energy-efficient Class-D amplifiers, and were developed to fit our customers’ highest requirements.

Christian Seidel, Group Leader Hardware, Mechanics & Layout Audio System Engineering Group from Harman Becker Automotive Systems in Straubing, Germany said, “The TDF8599 series gives us the opportunity to dramatically reduce the power dissipation in our multichannel audio amplifiers and at the same time increase the sound quality to satisfy our customers’ needs.”

The latest stereo Class-D amplifiers represent the next generation of NXP Class-D amplifiers, since the introduction of the first energy efficient amplifier portfolio in 2003. NXP Class-D amplifiers have previously been integrated in vehicles of various leading car manufacturers.

“With our new TDF8599 Class-D stereo amplifier family, we offer an outstanding audio experience while further driving down power consumption. We are creating the ideal technology platform to support next generation in-vehicle infotainment,” said Dr. Tobias Helbig, Senior Director Audio Power in BL Car Entertainment Solutions, NXP Semiconductors. “As car manufacturers continue to identify new opportunities to improve the passenger experience, and integrate an increasing range of functionality into their latest vehicles, it’s critical that in-car energy consumption is effectively and responsibly managed.”

The TDF8599 family includes the TDF8599A and TDF8599B dual Bridge-Tied Load (BTL) car audio amplifiers comprising a dual NDMOS-Transistor output stage based on Silicon On Insulator (SOI) BCD MOS technology. The NXP TDF8599A can operate in either non-I2C-bus mode or I2C-bus mode. When in I2C-bus mode, DC load detection results and fault conditions can be easily read back to the device. Up to 15 I2C-bus addresses can be selected. All products are fully qualified according to the AEC-Q100 automotive quality standard.

Availability

In total three devices from the new TDF8599 Class-D stereo amplifier family for car radio applications are currently available for ordering now. For more information please click here:
