Solution enables easy integration of Wireless USB capability with low power and small footprint
NXP Semiconductors, the newly independent semiconductor company founded by Philips, today announced availability of a Wireless USB device controller based upon the Certified Wireless USB specification. The NXP ISP3582 device controller combines the ease of use and speed of wired USB with the convenience of wireless connectivity for high-speed picture transfers, music downloads, printing and data synchronization for PC peripherals and consumer electronics. Unlike a hub and dongle approach to Wireless USB, the low power, small-footprint ISP3582 integrates directly into end systems at the board level, allowing a seamless replacement of wired USB in today’s current systems.
A recent report from high-tech marketing firm In-Stat, entitled USB 2006: Here Comes Wireless, forecasts that USB-enabled products will double by 2010, with WUSB being a vital contributor to this growth. Additionally, the report notes that the availability of an internal WUSB solution, as opposed to a hub and dongle approach, is particularly key for adoption in portable devices, such as digital cameras, digital camcorders and portable digital audio players.
The ISP3582 will be combined with Realtek’s highly integrated radio/baseband device, the RTU7011, in reference designs and modules, to deliver a CMOS solution capable of data transfers up to 480 Mbps. "We are extremely pleased to be selected by NXP as their preferred supplier of the WiMedia physical layer," said Ran-Hong Yan, senior vice president at Realtek. "NXP’s ISP3582 has many industry-leading features, and when combined with the RTU7011, the result is an optimal solution for embeddable, high-volume systems that require performance, small footprint and low power, such as digital cameras and MP3 players."
To lower overall design risk and ease system validation efforts, the ISP3582 has undergone a high degree of interoperability testing with Intel’s Wireless USB Host solution. "We’ve been performing interoperability testing with the IP of NXP's ISP3582 with great success," commented Ganesh Prasad, general manager of UltraWideband networking operations at Intel. "NXP’s support on their Wireless USB device solution has been outstanding, and coupled with their knowledge of the USB market, it provides the company a bright future in this new wireless market."
"The ISP3582 represents the first step toward widespread adoption of Certified Wireless USB," said Paul Marino, vice president and general manager of business line connectivity, NXP Semiconductors. "As a testament to our continued leadership in connectivity solutions, we now provide engineers with the freedom to choose from our wired USB families, migrate a system from wired to wireless with our compatible I/O or go directly to a Wireless USB design."
The NXP ISP3582 CMOS Certified Wireless USB solution is sampling now in 112 pin TFBGA package. Evaluation kits, complete with Realtek physical layer support, are available for strategic customer engagements. Production shipments are expected in 2Q 2007.
