HSINCHU, Taiwan, April 3, 2008 - UMC, a leading global semiconductor foundry, today announced that Global Views Magazine has awarded UMC with the corporate social responsibility (CSR) Model Award in the hi-tech category. Global Views Magazine has issued this award since 2005, and grades companies according to Oekom Research (a German CSR research institution) standards that evaluate social performance, environmental performance and financial information disclosure. UMC was the only semiconductor foundry among the 13 overall winners, demonstrating the company's widely recognized achievements in environmental protection, corporate governance and social participation.
"Receiving this award is an honor for UMC," said Dr. Jackson Hu, UMC's Chairman and CEO. "This accomplishment is further encouragement for us to maintain our world-class standards in CSR, where we emphasize corporate governance, labor relations, environmental protection and constructive participation in social affairs. UMC will continue carry out its social responsibility by further incorporating CSR within UMC's corporate culture."
UMC has put forth significant efforts in every aspect of CSR over the years, with successful results that have recently gained worldwide recognition. UMC's corporate social responsibility (CSR) report has received a Level A grade from Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the only company in Taiwan to achieve this standard.
