An article in EMSNow finds that independent distributors are finding a new niche by offering to convert existing inventories to RoHS compliance. Many OEMs and distributors are stuck with leftover components they are unable to use as they switch to RoHS-compliant parts.
The article quotes Michael Baker, quality manager at E-Certa Inc., a company that offers services to convert non-RoHS parts to RoHS-compliant parts. “More independent distributors have been using our RoHS conversion services. I’ve been receiving inquiries almost every day from independent distributors wanting to convert semiconductors for their clients,” says Baker. “Before, conversion requests came from OEMs and mil/aerospace (companies). Now it seems that independent distributors are placing orders to convert components just as rapidly.”
E-Certa specializes in lead-free conversion for semiconductors and testing for RoHS compliance. “They use us because they need a company that can not only convert components, but also provide the proper documentation and testing needed for RoHS compliance,” says Baker.
