Manchester WEEE plastics reprocessor set to operate from Feb

Axion Recycling’s multi-million pound mixed plastic waste recycling facility in Manchester will be operational by February 2007.

The recycler claims its 40,000 sq ft Salford plant will be one of the most advanced recycling facilities in Europe, capable of handling co-mingled plastic waste contaminated with materials such as metal, glass, cable and dirt. Aimed mainly at the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) stream, Axion says the facility will be hugely beneficial to compliance schemes.

The plant will allow for the waste plastic fraction from WEEE to be converted into high quality plastic polymer compounds.

Axion was able to further its work on developing and refining its plastics processing techniques after a 3 million investment by metal recycler S Norton & Co earlier this year.

“This new investment enables us to offer a full service to obligated WEEE producers and compliance schemes for the recycling of materials other than metals, which will be needed to meet the recovery targets required by the WEEE Directive,” said Axion technical director Keith Freegard.

The plant will also have the potential to develop recycling routes for additional plastics from other sources in the future such as end of life vehicles. It will have a full output production capacity of 14,000 tonnes a year, trading as Axion Polymers which will sell high grade compounds of recycled Polypropylene, Polyethylene and Polystyrene.
