Recycling body warns firms to act on WEEE rules

Thousands of UK manufacturers need to act to ensure they comply with WEEE rules on recycling electrical waste, due to come into force next summer.

According to recycling industry representative body Repic, after delays the Directive on recycling electronic and electrical waste products will come into force on 1 July 2007.

“Companies need to be taking appropriate action now,” said Dr Philip Morton, chief executive of Repic.
Repic is trying to increase awareness of the impact the WEEE Directive will have on producers and retailers when it becomes law.

Morton believes there might be more than 11,500 companies in the UK with producer responsibility who will be at risk if they fail to register to a compliance scheme.

“Over the next few months there are critical milestones that need to be met and a very short time window during which companies can register,” said Morton.
