The wilton Centre on Teesside is showing the way in recycling best practice.
The centre, one of the largest research and development sites in Europe, has adopted an innovative process, as developed by Gateshead-based firm Weeeco, to ensure all electronic equipment is recycled as required by the upcoming Waste and Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive.
Companies initially assess their electrical waste through an innovative desktop calculator devised by Weeeco.
After the level of service required is chosen, Weeeco collects and processes the waste.
Certification is supplied to show that the organisation has carried out its duty of care.
Keith Thompson, Wilton Centre facilities manager said: "The Wilton Centre generates a sizeable amount of WEEE and the reality is that to be able to deal with this responsibly takes a lot of time and effort.
"However, Weeeco’s service is automated thus reducing times and costs.
"It also ensures our old electrical equipment is recycled in the correct manner and none of it goes to landfill."
Weeeco is a not-for-profit organisation originally founded to enable public and private sector companies fulfil their WEEE regulatory duties.
