WEEE impact on Yorkshire and Humber
MThe impact of the waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) directive on the Yorkshire and Humber region is under investigation by Recycling Action Yorkshire (RAY).
In partnership with Yorkshire Forward, RAY has commissioned a scoping study to find out how well prepared the region is for the upcoming directive and how it can take advantage of the opportunities offered.
The research hopes to add a regional perspective of EEE and WEEE to existing national and EU research and identify where the legislation will have significant impact, as well as compliance options for producers and retailers.
RAY project manager Ben Stone said: “The research is expected to give RAY and Yorkshire Forward clear guidance on how best to support local businesses and industry in relation to forthcoming electronics legislation and the opportunities which can be exploited by the Yorkshire and Humber economy.”
The study will review the potential for a WEEE centre of e
xcellence that focuses on training, education, producing best practice guidance and advising on new technologies available for WEEE reprocessing. It will also explore opportunities to increase the amount of IT products that are refurbished.
