Wincanton completes Argos WEEE trial
FOLLOWING THE launch its WEEE recycling facility earlier this year, supply chain provider Wincanton has completed a three-month trial with Argos to recycle the retailer's electrical and electronic return, in preparation for next year's legislation.
In the trial, Wincanton managed Argos's returned electrical and electronic goods, and achieved recycling rates of over 95% from the products treated at its WEEE recycling plant in Billingham, Middlesbrough.
Items handled by Wincanton in the trial ranged from alarm clocks and DVD players, to lawnmowers and microwaves. Valuable materials including metals, plastics and circuit boards, were said to be extracted from the process and separated to be used in the manufacture of new electrical and electronic devices.
Mark Jones, project manager at Argos said: "The partnership with Wincanton has been extremely useful in ascertaining the processes we need to have in place when legislation is introduced next year. The recycling of electrical and electronic equipment poses unique challenges and our work with Wincanton has helped to illustrate ways in which we can achieve best practice in recycling WEEE."
Simon Hill, commercial manager, Wincanton, commented on the trial: "The Argos trial has been extremely useful, allowing us to test the Billingham plant and demonstrate its capability, whilst providing a crucial insight into the material breakdown and recovery rate. It is also satisfying to know that Argos - a major UK retailer - has consulted with us in their WEEE preparations."
